Founder
Shaquille Mathurin
Shaquille is an adovocate for free spreach and open dialog through diverse perspectives and rational thought. Shaquille founded the MHI in hopes to create a platform that provides more oppurtunities for young people around the world to voice their views on the global stage. Shaquille holds a masters degree in International Relations, with a distinction from Queen Mary University of London and also holds a bachelors degree in International Relations from the University of Essex. Between 2019-2020, Shaquille lived in Hong Kong for a study year abroad at Lingnan University, where he learned more about Asian society and indo-pacific geopolitics. Shaquille's primary academic interests are in conflict analysis, cultural studies and the global balance of power, though has research experience in a multitude of topics, from democratisation to international treaty compliance. At the University of Essex, Shaquille achieved a First in his dissertation titled "Aftermath of the Arab Spring: Strategic Oppurtunities for Regional Forces to Exert their power", where he analysed the power shifts within the Middle East in the 2010's. At Queen Mary, Shaquille's disseration titled, "Can China be Considered a Neo-Colonial Power in Sub-Saharan Africa?" focussed on the growing economic and political influence of China in African states.

With an enriching semester abroad experience at Hong Kong University, where she focused on Politics of the Global South and delved into Special Topics in Political Science, Kia embodies a passion for understanding socio-political issues. Her academic background, coupled with a global perspective, equips Kia with the skills necessary to navigate the diverse challenges of our innovative initiatives. Kate Sorgi
Kate Sorgi, a researcher and the North American Team Leader at the Mathurin Hybrid Initiative, is a professional with a deep interest in international relations, global health, social justice, and related fields. She holds a masters degree in international relations and now works as a research coordinator supporting international research aimed at improving the health of women in low-resource and low-income communities, and particularly those living with HIV. Beyond her academic and professional pursuits, Kate’s aspirations are deeply rooted in a commitment to research that prioritizes community-centered approaches and uncovers the truths underlying the intricate web of international institutions and politics. She believes that research should not only inform public policy but should challenge the status quo, empower marginalized voices, and dismantle power structures that perpetuate global injustice. Through her leadership role over the North American Team, Kate aims to support research that fosters meaningful conversations about the modern world, particularly by examining the role of North American countries in diplomatic relations, geopolitical issues, and the ever-apparent power dynamics that exist today.

Fraser Brown
Fraser Brown, the lead global advisor at the Mathurin Hybrid Initiative, is an accomplished scholar and advocate with a profound commitment to fostering positive global change. Holding a BA (1st Hons.) in English from Edinburgh Napier University and an MSc (Distinction) in International Conflict and Cooperation from the University of Stirling, Fraser brings a unique blend of literary insight and international relations expertise to the forefront. At Edinburgh Napier University, Fraser delved into captivating modules such as "Utopia, Dystopia and the Global Political Imagination," "Fictions of Terror: From Dynamite Violence to Media Spectacle," and "Postcolonial Fiction and Film." This foundation equipped Fraser with exceptional critical thinking, communication, and creative problem-solving skills. His academic journey extended to a focus on contemporary and postcolonial politics, with a particular emphasis on the intersection of neoliberalism and climate change, explored through the lens of contemporary American literature in his final dissertation project. Continuing his academic pursuits at the University of Stirling, Fraser achieved an MSc with Distinction in International Conflict and Cooperation. Modules such as "Climate Change, Human Security and Resource Conflicts" and "Approaches to International Politics" not only broadened his understanding but also honed his project management and negotiation skills. Fraser's passion for sustainability, particularly the politics of water, is exemplified through his master's thesis, which focused on Syrian water management—a testament to his commitment to addressing critical global challenges. In his role in the Global Advisory team, Fraser draws on this rich academic background, seamlessly integrating literary and political insights. A fervent advocate for positive change, Fraser leverages his cross-applicable skills and deep knowledge to contribute meaningfully to the discourses in the Middle East, as well as on climate change, sustainable development, and international cooperation.

Caleigh Doyle
Caleigh Doyle is the lead North American Global Analyst at the Mathurin Hybrid Initiative, where she blends academic rigor and practical experience. Her research, driven by a profound passion for international studies, explores critical topics like democracy, globalization, and foreign affairs intricacies, offering insightful analyses of global political systems to enhance governance, policy impacts, and societal understanding. With an extensive research portfolio, Caleigh has notably contributed to projects such as Pivot 2020, an urban exploration project aimed at understanding sustainability for young people in cities during the COVID-19 pandemic, in collaboration with SFU's Morris J. Wosk Centre for Dialogue and Youthful Cities. Additionally, her internship with Saath Charitable Trust in Gujarat, India, provided deep insights into the challenges of government land titling programs in urban settings. Based in Toronto, Canada, Caleigh’s current work spans research on electoral innovation and modernization in the government sector. In addition, she plays a crucial role as co-chair of a fundraising development committee at a local youth shelter. Her long-standing position as a communication assistant with HEEALs in Gurgaon, India, where she supports project proposal development, highlights her dedication to grassroots activism and societal improvements. Caleigh holds a master’s degree in International Development Studies from York University, where she conducted a comprehensive four-month field study on property rights in urban informal settlements for her thesis. Her educational background is further enriched by a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science, with a specialization in International Relations and a minor in Philosophy from Brock University. She is currently enhancing her skill set with a Certificate in Principles of Market Research at the University of Georgia. At the Mathurin Hybrid Initiative, Caleigh is dedicated to initiating critical dialogue and addressing global political issues, striving to integrate theoretical knowledge with practical solutions. She champions discussions that unite diverse perspectives, encouraging understanding and collaborative action.

Bettina Tovalino​
Bettina Tovalino is a professional, passionate about human rights, inclusion, migration, and the legal field. Currently, Bettina contributes to the Communications PR Area at the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO/CVSP), where she designs and produce informational materials and support behavior change campaigns, leveraging her skills in writing, analysis, and communication to promote public health at a regional level. Additionally, Bettina is a part of the Mathurin Hybrid Initiative, where she conduct's research to amplify the voices of underrepresented communities in global politics, reflecting her commitment to inclusion and diversity. Bettina's career also includes roles such as an international section writer at the Pontificia Universidad Católica Argentina, covering news about Europe and the United States, and as an editor for the magazine of the Student Center for Political Science and International Relations (CECPRI). In this role, she has been responsible for verifying and ensuring the quality of each publication, strictly adhering to editorial guidelines and journalistic principles. Bettina has also collaborated with the IIPE UNESCO Latin America and the Caribbean, supporting the integration of digital platforms and database management. Bettina's experience spans various organizations and projects, all focused on promoting equity, social justice, and respect for human rights.

Ella Day
Ella is a journalist who is currently in her final year of her undergraduate degree in History at the University of Exeter. Ella specialises in modern histories of colonialism and indigenous peoples, and often focuses on the relationships between the two. Her studies take a cultural approach, meaning she considers these topics in relation to themes such as race, gender, and sexuality. Ella's dissertation focuses on the memories and legacies of federal education policy for Native American youth, specifically off-reservation boarding schools. Ella is fascinated by politics particularly relating to the legacies of colonialism both in Britain and internationally. This includes debates on indigenous rights. She uses her historical understanding to contextualise her research, making her degree instrumental to her journalism.
